High School Seniors Win 723 Awards in Maryland Distinguished Scholars Program

October 8, 1999
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) 12th grade students have won 723 awards in the Maryland Distinguished Scholars program, which honors students throughout the state for their exceptional academic achievement and, for some students, their talent in the visual and performing arts.

MCPS students won 105 finalist awards, 95 semifinalist awards and 523 honorable mention designations. All county high schools, with the exception of James Hubert Blake High School, which does not have a senior class this year, were represented in the program.

The county had 91 academic finalists, or 25 percent of the 366 academic finalists in the state. Another 14 students were finalists in the talent category, about 18 percent of the 79 talent finalists in Maryland.

Every finalist will be offered an annual scholarship of $3,000 for undergraduate study at a Maryland college or university.

Achievement finalists have either a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) and SAT or PSAT scores of 1370 or higher, or a GPA of at least 3.7 and SAT or PSAT scores of 1460 or higher. All academic honorees are seniors who requested participation in the program last year.

Talent competitors in vocal and instrumental music, dance, drama and visual arts had to audition before or submit a portfolio for evaluation by panels of professionals. In total, 605 nominations were received for the talent competition.
