Barnsley Elementary School Named National Blue Ribbon School

September 24, 2020

Lucy V. Barnsley Elementary School has been selected a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). The winners were announced on September 24.

Barnsley is the 42nd MCPS school to be named a National Blue Ribbon winner. The school was among 317 public and 50 non-public schools being recognized this year.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes and honors schools that exhibit high performance and/or significant improvement in reading and mathematics achievement as measured by Maryland assessments. Schools must meet other rigorous standards developed by the Maryland State Department of Education and USDE, including school leadership, professional development and instructional approaches based on school-age population. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“Congratulations to the Barnsley Elementary School community on being named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Superintendent Jack Smith. “This is a great example of how highly engaged staff can partner with parents and community members and get amazing results for our students.”

Barnsley is the first school in the state of Maryland named after a woman, and has 746 kindergarten to Grade 5 students. More than 40 percent of the students represent socioeconomically disadvantaged families, special needs students, or English language learners. The school offers a Deaf and Hard of Hearing sign language program, and is the only elementary school in Montgomery County with a Gifted and Talented Learning Disabled program. It also serves as a Center for Enriched Studies, bringing together students from several clusters for high-level, fast-paced instruction. Barnsley has an award-winning Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.

“This honor was achieved through the hard work and dedication of our staff, students and parents,” said Barnsley Principal Christine Troffkin. “I am honored and humbled to be the principal at Barnsley, but I must also acknowledge the leadership under our former principal, Mr. Andrew Winter. Mr. Winter established a legacy of excellence that is evident every day.”

The winners will be honored during a virtual recognition ceremony on November 12–13.
