MCPS Operating Status Remains Code Green (Normal Operations) and open for Friday, June 9 We continue to monitor local air quality conditions related to wildfire smoke streaming from Canada. Local data indicate conditions may remain “unhealthy,” advising restricted outdoor activities, especially for “sensitive groups,” for Friday, June 9. Therefore guidance for MCPS schools is to remain open under the same guidelines as the past two days with restricted outdoor activities and cancellation of outdoor recess. We encourage families to limit time outdoors when students are home, and to take precautions when traveling to and from school, such as wearing a mask when walking or waiting at bus stops. Athletics will operate under guidelines similar to heat index warnings that incorporate the NCAA guidelines for outdoor play, which include reduced outdoor time and increased monitoring of athletes. Field trips have been rescheduled, modified or canceled depending on the location and extent of outdoor activity. Regarding any graduation ceremonies, individual schools will communicate guiding information for their individual schools. Reminder: School facilities are used by non-MCPS groups who will apply their own guidance with regard to events and activities; these may include clubs and non-MCPS athletic events. Any modifications to this guidance will be communicated as conditions continue to be monitored. We continue to work with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services and to closely follow local Air Index Quality measures as established by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Three MCPS Students Named Carson Scholars

Three MCPS students have been named Carson Scholars, earning $1,000 college scholarships. Carson Scholars are students in grades 4-11 who excel academically, donate their time and talents to others, and demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities. MCPS students who are first-time scholarship recipients are: Taian Chen, Northwest High School Claire Kirner, Odessa Shannon Middle School Allison Xu, Walter Johnson High School Six additional MCPS students reaffirmed their status as Carson Scholars for maintaining a 3.75 grade point average.
