Anna Lukacs, MCPS Visual Art Center student and Albert Einstein High School senior, received first prize for her entry in this year’s Congressional High School Art competition for Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District. Her painting, which used Maryland symbols, will be displayed for a year in the U.S. Capitol with artwork from each U.S. congressional district.

MCPS schools and families can pick up free school supplies for students at the Drive for Supplies celebration and press conference July 28 at Richard Montgomery High School. School representatives, nonprofit organizations and individual families can come to the school starting at 10 a.m. to pick up books; notebooks, pens and pencils and markers, office supplies and more. The new and used supplies were donated by participating schools and sorted by student volunteers.

Rolling Terrace Elementary School gives extra math support during the school year to students with limited English proficiency (LEP). Through the S.T.A.R. Catchers Program, LEP students get help with test-taking strategies and math vocabulary, and use data notebooks to monitor their progress.

Students in elementary and middle school posted significant gains on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) while achievement gaps between African American and Hispanic students and their white and Asian American peers narrowed. Among elementary students, 89.9 percent scored at the proficient or advanced level for reading and 87.2 percent for mathematics. Among middle school students, 86.3 percent scored at the proficient or advanced level for reading and 76.9 percent for mathematics.

Green Schools Focus presented awards at its end-of-year celebration to middle and high school winners in a competition held to get the word out about conserving energy. Takoma Park Middle School and Springbrook High School were the first place winners. Green Schools Focus encourages helping the environment and conserving resources.

The Montgomery County Board of Education is seeking nominations from the public for its Twelfth Annual Awards for Distinguished Service to Public Education. The awards recognize individuals (including students), groups, and organizations that have made exemplary contributions to public education in Montgomery County. Forms must be received in the Board of Education office by 5:00 p.m. on August 1, 2008.
