Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff,
Today, I am writing to share our updated considerations and planning for the fall. As you know, based on current health conditions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, MCPS will remain in a virtual-only instructional model through the first semester—January 29, 2021; or until state and local health officials determine conditions in our county allow for students to return safely after the first semester.
The updated MCPS Fall 2020: Reimagine, Reopen, Recover Guide reflects this change and provides an overview of our virtual-only learning model for the first semester. We will continue to improve upon this plan as we receive feedback from you—our parents, staff and students. On Thursday, August 6, 2020, we will present this updated plan to the Montgomery County Board of Education. The Board of Education will vote on this plan at that time. We encourage you to tune in to this important conversation. The meeting, which will begin at 3:30 p.m., will be streamed live on the MCPS website and on MCPS TV (Comcast 34, Verizon 36, RCN 89). If you are unable to tune in live, a recording of the meeting will be posted on YouTube and on the MCPS website. We also will host two virtual conversations for the community—August 12 for parents and staff and August 13 for students. Details on both virtual conversations will be posted on the MCPS website and shared with families in the coming days.
MCPS FALL 2020: Reimagine, Reopen, Recover--READ THE GUIDE
We built on what we learned during the spring to develop a model that will provide a robust and dynamic virtual learning experience for our students. Virtual learning schedules for students align closely with what a student would typically experience in schools. Our staff is being provided additional professional development to enhance their instructional abilities in a virtual model; we have put systems in place to ensure all students have access to digital devices and access to the internet when they are away from school buildings; and we are building in additional time for student support and learning opportunities. We are also streamlining digital tools and platforms to make it easier for our students, staff and families to engage in teaching and learning.
We are preparing critical resources and support for parents, staff and students. We will be sharing additional information with you in the coming days regarding technology and learning material distribution and other information to prepare for online learning. Your child’s school will also be communicating with you regarding schedules and other important back-to-school information.
We will continue to work with the community to address concerns and questions as we quickly approach the first day of school. We encourage you to submit your feedback, questions and concerns through our feedback form. Staff review these submissions closely to help shape our work. Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we work together to meet the needs of our community and prepare for a successful 2020-2021 school year.
