Security Assistant

WORKING TITLE: Security Assistant GRADE: 14 MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration maintain a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other responsibilities related to school security operations. Receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on the more difficult or unusual situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others. Knowledge of behavior management techniques. Knowledge of security practices and procedures. Investigative procedures knowledge desirable. Must know, or have the ability to rapidly acquire specific knowledge of, school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior. Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and to understand the role of each staff member having responsibility for student attendance, behavior, and building security. Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and to perform assigned tasks under team leader supervision. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields. Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment. Experience in investigation desirable. Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver's license, or equivalent. First aid and CPR certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina to spend long periods of time walking and standing and to complete security patrol duties. Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal/security team leader to provide maximum security coverage. Required to occasionally work overtime. Required to wear the designated security uniforms.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Checks parking areas and entrances to schools.

Queries visitors on the school premises and assures that such persons report to the school office or leave the buildings or grounds.

Maintains records of contacts and activities.

Reports unusual incidents and observations to team leader or appropriate school or legal authorities in accordance with procedures established by the principal.

Upon request of police or other legal authority, may hold violators for police and confiscate drugs and other physical evidence.

Checks hallways, rest rooms, cafeteria, and remote areas of the facility.

Sends students to classroom, counselor, or other staff members.

Confers with students regarding improper behavior and attempts to obtain voluntary compliance with school standards.10. Confers with appropriate staff regarding specific incidents.

Reports to the security team leader or principal/designee regarding building conditions or practices which interfere with maintenance of building security, or the welfare and safety of students.

Operates security equipment such as two-way radios, metal detectors, etc.

Performs related duties; i.e. parking, buses, detention, etc., as required.
