What is the difference between username, user id, userid, loginid, logonid, MCPS id?

There is no difference.  They all refer to the id that you use to log in to your workstation or log in to applications at MCPS.  MCPS generally uses the term username but many applications use a synonym.  On the myID login screen, it asks the user to enter their user ID.

What do I do if I forget my password?

No problem! If you have previously logged in to myID and set up your five challenge questions, you can click the Forgot password link on the MCPS website staff page or on the Help Desk web pages. You will enter your MCPS username and answer the five challenge questions. After correctly answering the questions, you can reset your own password. 

Please note that passwords must be at least 8 characters long, must have at least one number, and must have at least one upper case character.

If you have not yet logged in to myID, please call the MCPS Help Desk at 301-517-5800 and they will help you register with myID and reset your own password.

What do I do if I forgot the answers to my challenge questions?

If you know your username and password, it is simple to change your selected challenge questions and update your answers. Refer to Update Challenge Questions (PDF) for detailed instructions on how to make your changes.

What should I do if I forgot both my password AND the answers to my challenge questions?

How do I unlock my account?

Accounts are locked after multiple failed attempts to login. Please contact your school ITSS or the MCPS Help Desk at 301-517-5800 for assistance.

What applications use myID?

Logging in from NSBO offices or schools and my new password does not seem to work for all applications.  What password do I use? 

If you are having problems logging into applications after resetting your password with myID,  it is probably due to our large MCPS network and the time it takes to update the password throughout the system.  Your previous password will work for one hour during which time the password will be updated to the new password you have entered in myID.   

What are the MCPS security requirements for passwords? 

All passwords must be at least 8 characters long, must have at least one number, and must have at least one capital letter. 

What are some ideas for passwords that are secure but memorable?

Generally speaking, the longer your password, the more secure it is.  MCPS passwords must be at least 8 characters long but no longer than 20 characters.

Use MiXeD case (uppercase and lowercase) in your password to increase the security of your password. Your password must contain at least one upper case character.

Use a non-alphabetical character to increase the security of your password. Your password must contain at least one number. 

Use a phrase and eliminate the spaces to help you remember the password.  Eliminate spaces since some applications do not recognize a space in a password.

What are some passwords strategies to avoid?

Do not use your current password or any of your previous passwords.  If someone previously obtained your password, they might try to use it again.

Do not include a space in your password as some applications do not recognize a space in a password.

Do not use any part of your name, username, or employee number as part of your password because others can easily obtain this information.

How do I change my challenge questions to different questions?

It is simple to change your selected challenge questions and update your answers.  After logging into myID, click the My Account link on the left.  Then click the Challenge Q&A link on the left to update your challenge questions and answers.  Refer to Update Challenge Questions (PDF) for more detailed instructions on how to make your changes.

How do I change my password?

After you have logged in to myID and setup your challenge questions, you can change your MCPS password in myID. To do so, enter your MCPS username and password, click on the My Account link on the left, then click on the Change Password link. 

What should I do when I receive a password expiration notice?

MCPS passwords expire 120 days after the last time the password was changed.  When you get a password expiration notice, please follow the directions in the email and go to myID to reset your password that meets MCPS security standards.

Does myID work from a Mac or using a non-IE browser?

Yes.  Firefox and Safari have been tested.  Safari works better.  If using Firefox, please note that the background color is very close to the button color.  You will need to look very closely to find where to click to OK or click to Save your password.
