MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

6-steps maintenance

map_sc.pngStaff members perform a wide variety of maintenance services to keep Montgomery County Public Schools in optimal condition. This includes repairs to building components and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems. Maintenance and repair services are performed by staff who work out of three regional service centers (Downcounty, Midcounty, and Upcounty). Each service center has five shops that are open from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. providing specialized trade work:

  • The carpentry shop cares for doors, windows, glass work, floor tiles, lockers, locks and keys, painting, roofing, handrails, ramps, and special-cut ceiling tiles.
  • The electrical shop cares for breakers, panel boxes, switches, outlets, electric cook stoves, emergency lights, generators, and parking lot lights.
  • The general maintenance shop provides grounds maintenance and field mowing, playground equipment repair, graffiti removal, trash removal, snow plowing, tree trimming, excavation, and other services.
  • The HVAC-R shop covers all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration needs including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, circulation pumps, heat pumps, window air conditioners, refrigerators, ice makers, etc.
  • The plumbing shop cares for circulation pumps, drains, drinking fountains, gas-fired stoves, toilets, and showers

One centralized center provides repair service for all MCPS facilities, regardless of their location:

  • The electronics shop cares for fire alarms, security alarms, bell, public address systems, two-way radios, and audio/visual equipment.
  • The heavy equipment shop maintains and repairs lawn tractors, mowers, trimmers, and snow-blowers, and mows the grass at schools with sloping lawns.
  • The industrial equipment repair shop cares for kilns, printing presses, trash compactors, and elevators. Technicians also rebuild motors and do line painting in parking lots.
  • The materials fabrication and rigging shop does masonry repairs, and installs/maintains projection screens, stage curtains, upholstery, window blinds, and ceramic tile.

Centralized preventive maintenance (PM) team members are dedicated to performing critical PM tasks at all MCPS locations. Their work includes replacing HVAC filters and ceiling tiles, inspecting roofs and building exteriors, and more.
