Tree Identification

Students learn to identify native trees as well as use hand-held global positioning system (GPS) units. Working in groups, the students use the GPS units to navigate to marked trees at the outdoor education center. Then, students use a dichotomous key to identify the tree species they found. The role of trees in the riparian buffer is emphasized.

Lesson Resources

These lesson materials are designed to supplement and refresh the workshops.  Teachers are strongly encouraged to attend a training workshop before teaching the tree identification class. Teachers are encouraged to use the resources below, but are welcome to adjust them to fit the needs of their students and outdoor environmental education program.
