In Unit 5, students learn how to use mathematics to make decisions and learn how mathematics is used in many areas of their lives. Students explore apportionment and fair division methods to learn how to allocate resources fairly and equitably. Various voting methods are explored. Students realize that there are other methods of making decisions besides majority (or even plurality) rule. Exponential and logistic models of population growth and medication dosing are used to emphasize the importance of decision making in regards to using resources and taking medicines effectively. Health care and long-term health care are analyzed so that students may make the best decisions on what kinds of care are affordable. Finally, weighted averages help students understand grade point averages and combining various types of quantities into new quantities.
