Unit 5

Unit 5 is typically an eight-week unit taught from April to June.

Unit Overview

Computation strategies for multiplication are more complex than those for addition or subtraction. The ability to break numbers apart in flexible ways is very important for multiplication. Students should be encouraged to use a strategy from the perspective of what they know and understand. Grade 2 instruction in multiplication focuses on the strategy of repeated addition using concrete and pictorial materials. Students are introduced to division by dividing a quantity into equal groups. Sequential development for multiplication and division are the same as addition and subtraction: concrete to pictorial to symbolic notation. When given instruction that emphasizes thinking strategies, students develop an understanding of multiplication and the ability to use it at the same time.
In this unit, students review values of coins and bills, make money exchanges, and exchange currency equivalencies. They solve problems using addition and subtraction up to $10.00.
In Grade 2, students construct relationships among the facts and between addition and subtraction. They practice the basic facts to 18 to attain mastery. Mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts helps students make reasonable estimates, perform operations with larger numbers, and provide a basis for multiplication. All students are expected to demonstrate mastery of these facts by the end of this unit.
