Unit 2

Unit 2 is typically a six-week unit taught from October to December.

Unit Overview

The continued development of geometric reasoning and spatial sense requires young children to experience two- and three-dimensional shapes in a variety of ways. Instruction should provide opportunities for students to build with shapes, draw shapes on paper and using technology, and observe shapes in art, nature, and architecture. Through these opportunities, students will identify specific attributes of three-dimensional figures and model symmetry and congruency with concrete objects.
Children in Grade 1 mastered addition and subtraction fact families with sums to 10. In Grade 2 children continue to develop fact mastery with sums to 18 and begin to develop strategies to support two-and three-digit addition. In this unit children are given opportunities to discover their own addition strategies, share the strategies that yield correct answers, and learn common efficient algorithms. Instruction on addition strategies is a preview to IG Unit 3 and is not assessed in this unit.
