Grade 2

What your child will learn

Students in Grade 2 use mathematics to model real world situations.

• In Unit 1, students work with numbers, including place value, number representation, expanded notation, data analysis, and patterns.
• In Unit 2, students focus on geometric reasoning and spatial sense. Students identify 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes, study attributes of shapes, classify shapes, and model symmetry and congruency with concrete objects.
• In Unit 3, students use a variety of strategies to model and solve addition and subtraction problems involving two- and three-digit numbers with regrouping. Students write number sentences to represent the relationships in the mathematical problem.
• In Unit 4, student’s model, read, and write numerals that represent common fractions. Both the regional model and the set model are used. In addition, students estimate and measure in customary and metric units. They measure length, weight, temperature, area, time, and capacity using standard and non-standard units.
• In Unit 5, students construct relationships among the basic facts and between addition and subtraction. They practice the basic facts to 18 to attain mastery. Instruction in multiplication focuses on the strategy of repeated addition using concrete and pictorial materials. Students are introduced to division by dividing a quantity into equal groups. In addition, student review values of coins and bills, make money exchanges, and exchange currency equivalencies.
