The Cloverly Elementary School Student Government Association sponsored a “Kids Helping Kids” book drive for the Moonachie School District in New Jersey, which had several schools displaced due to Hurricane Sandy. Students, staff and parents collected gently used books, new books and money to purchase additional books. The donated books were delivered to nearby Wood-Ridge School District in Wood-Ridge, N.J.
In December, students at James Hubert Blake High School visited recipients of Meals On Wheels in Wheaton to spread holiday cheer. According to an article in the school newspaper, The Blake Beat, signature coordinator Elizabeth Yargici approached choral teacher Sandra Zinkievich with the idea of following a Meals on Wheels delivery van to the homes of their consistent recipients. Many students jumped at the opportunity to be involved, and it made them feel good to lift the spirits of others, especially those who are elderly and sick, during the holidays.
Also recently at Blake High School, 32 students showcased their knowledge of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, politics, law, citizenship and current events at the District 8 “We the People” Simulated Congressional Hearing. Guest judges included Board of Education member Michael Durso, Montgomery County Councilwoman Nancy Floreen and a representative from U.S. Congressman Chris Van Hollen's office. The “We the People” competition is a national contest sponsored by the Center for Civic Education in which students prove their knowledge on how the constitution has shaped U.S. history and how it continues to affect today’s society. This year’s team will head to the state competition in February.
