COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits - FAQs

MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) schools will distribute home rapid nasal (nose) test kits to schools the weeks of Feb. 28 and March 21. Schools will then communicate specific plans and dates/times for their distributions to students and staff.

If you do not receive a test kit, it is likely this was not the week they were distributed to your school. COVID-19 rapid test kits are in high demand nationally and MCPS cannot procure enough to conduct this testing weekly.

There are two rapid (2) tests in each box. Please take the kit home.

  • Close Contact:  When a student has been identified as a close contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19—Use a home rapid test 5 Days after exposure.

  • In Quarantine:  When an unvaccinated student is in quarantine—Use a rapid test on Day 5 to return to school on Day 6.

  • Symptoms:  When a student has developed COVID-19 symptoms—Use a rapid test at onset of symptoms.

  • Travel and/or Gathering:  When returning from travel or large gatherings—Use a rapid test before returning to school.

  • Please take the test on a clean, flat, dry surface.
  • Please follow the instructions provided inside the testing kit that you receive. Additionally, the testing kit manufacturer, iHealth has online instructions and a video tutorial on how to properly take the test.

Results should be reported shortly after the test is administered utilizing the online MCPS form

To submit your results, you will need:

  1. Access to a computer or smart phone.
  2. The ability to fill out the online form (LINK)
  3. OPTIONAL: A photo of the test kit showing the results. You can use a mobile device or Chromebook. (see the directions section of this website)

Students who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for 5 days.

  • If on day 5 the student has no, or improving, symptoms and has been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication, the student may return to in-person instruction on Day 6.

  • Day 1 for positive students is the day after on-set of symptoms or day after the date tested if asymptomatic.

  • We will strongly recommend any student who is in isolation or quarantine take a rapid test before returning to school.  If families do not have rapid tests available from prior distributions, we will make tests available for pick-up or mail tests to families who are unable to pick up a test at school.  Testing will be a recommendation only and will not be required to return from isolation or quarantine.

  • Students who return after a 5 day isolation or quarantine period must wear a mask at all times around others, except while eating or drinking.

Stay home, until the symptoms have resolved and notify your school administrator.

No. CDC recommends that individuals that test positive should not retest for 90 days from the date of their initial positive test date.
