STUDENT PLANNERS
For students in grades 3 through 5, our school will make a student planner available for student purchase in an effort to teach students the importance of keeping track of their assignments. The planner is used by teachers to help each child track his or her assignments and to let you know of assignments that are due. While this is a voluntary purchase, (we expect the cost to be approximately $2.50), we strongly believe a student planner is a valuable organizational tool to help you and your child monitor completion of assigned tasks. If you do not want your child to purchase the school’s planner, please provide a tool your child can use for the same purpose.
BACKPACKS
We strongly recommend that students have backpacks without wheels. Backpacks with wheels are too large for storage on hooks or in cubbies in the classroom and impede the flow of traffic in the hallways and stairwells. The MCPS Transportation Department requires the aisles on the buses to remain clear, and rolling backpacks are too large to be kept on students’ laps or contained in the seating area. Students should consider carrying their lunch bags separately if they do not fit in an ordinary backpack. Please ensure that both backpacks and lunch bags or boxes are labeled with the first and last name of the child.
Kindergarten
- A large enough book bag to carry papers, a large library book, and other things to and from school.
- Crayons, scissors, and paste to be kept at home to do homework assignments.
First Grade
- A sturdy school box (plastic seems to last longer) that will hold all of the following supplies:
- Scissors (blunt ends are safer)
- Glue sticks (no Elmer's glue or paste)
- Crayons (a box of 24 or more is encouraged)
- Beginner pencils (large diameter)
- Rectangular or square plain eraser.
Also have:
- A book bag to take things to and from school (large enough to accommodate a folder 11 1/2 x 9 1/2)
- Plastic pocket folder (pocket at bottom, not on the side
- 1 Composition book 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 - 100 pages (sewn in middle)
Second Grade
- Backpack or bookbag
- 4 sturdy pocket folders, pocket on the bottom (plastic folders last longer)
- #2 pencils, labeled-no mechanical pencils, please
- Crayons, no more than 48 count
- Rectangular pink erasers
- 4 school-time composition books, (9 ¾ x 7 ½” sewn in the middle – three different colors would be helpful) with names on each
- Sturdy school box
- Extra large glue sticks, labeled
- Scissors, labeled
- Colored pencils
- Highlighter
- Enclosed, hand-held pencil sharpener
The following items are welcomed but not required:
- Soap or sanitizer
- Facial tissue
Third Grade
- Crayons
- Glue sticks
- Loose leaf notebook paper, wide ruled
- Notebook dividers
- Binder, 1-2 inches
- #2 pencils (labeled)
- 3 colored pencils or pens for checking work
- Pencil box or pencil holder that fits in the rings of notebook
- 4 composition books (sewn in middle)
- 2 pocket folders
The following items are welcomed but not required:
- Disinfectant wipes
- Facial tissues
- Hand sanitizer
- Paper towels
- Storage bags (plastic; gallon or sandwich size)
Fourth Grade
- Small (1") 3 ring loose leaf binder-no zippers or Velcro (Must be 1"-larger binders do not fit in desks)
- 3 one-subject spiral notebooks (wide lined)
- Plastic pencil holder that fits in the rings of binder
- Wide lined ruled loose leaf paper (please keep an extra supply at home)
- Highlighter (labeled)
- #2 pencils
- Erasers
- Small box of colored pencils
- 1 book cover for math book, size LARGE (soft and stretchy-not sticky)
- Pencil sharpener (which collects shavings)-NOT BATTERY OPERATED!!!
- 2 packages of post-it notes to be kept at home
The following are welcomed but not required:
- Facial tissue
- Hand sanitizer
Fifth Grade
- Large 3 ring (metal) looseleaf notebook
- Paper: loose leaf/wide lined (and always have extra at home!)
- #2 pencils (NO MECHANICAL PENCILS)
- Erasers
- 6 dividers for loose leaf binder
- Blue or black ball point pen
- Ruler (metric/standard) and protractor
- Fine line markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Scissors, glue sticks
- 1 book cover, JUMBO (soft and stretchy-NOT STICKY!!!) or supply a large grocery store sized paper bag
- 1 book cover, REGULAR size (soft and stretchy-NOT STICKY!!!) or supply a large grocery store sized paper bag
- Plastic pencil case to fit in binder rings
- 3 composition books (black and white - wide ruled)
- 1 pocket folder
