    Excerpt from What it Takes to be a Teen Entrepreneur. Article written by Dual Enrollment participant Jeff Hilnbrand during the 2010-2011 school year.

    Meet James Furilla

    James Furilla is the professor of Dual Enrollment's Introduction to Business course through Montgomery College. Having previously worked for Lockheed Martin in the Human Resources department, he knows a thing or two about business and entrepreneurship.

    “I am in full support of teens wanting to be entrepreneurs,” Furilla said. “It’s great. But they have to be willing to grab the bull by the horns. A teen must not enter thinking they have a safety net, because parents won’t always be there for you in the business world. One must enter with the mindset of a businessperson. You can’t think like a 16-year-old, you have to think like a 60-year-old.”

    Furilla is a strong advocate for “making a plan,” a phrase his students know all too well. “A [teen entrepreneur] must be businesslike, risk-taking and a good planner. You have to start small and expand, recognizing the limitations involved. A good entrepreneur will minimize limitations and risks, and not lie to himself. That is important.”
