Mock Trial

Mock Trial tryouts will be held Oct. 1, 2, and 3, 2008, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm in room 153.

Mock Trial is a case prepared for and tried by students.  The lawyers and witnesses are students who have prepared to argue either for the prosecution or the defense.  Mock Trial works in teams with three lawyers and three witnesses per side.

Each team creates a strategy for approaching the case and focusing in on what needs to be proven or mitigated.

The student lawyers are responsible for creating an opening and closing statement as well as preparing three direct and three cross-examinations of witnesses.

The student witnesses are responsible for understanding their roles as witnesses.  They need to be prepared to answer questions from a direct examination as well as a cross-examination.

Mock Trial is fun. It has an engaging and competitive quality as well as fostering cooperative learning.

Mock Trial enables students to get a hands-on perspective of law and disputes in general.  Students learn how to analyze both sides of an argument.

Students really learn how the legal system in this country works.  Depending on the case used, they can gain a greater understanding of important landmark cases.

Controlling and organizing the flow of information is a valuable skill which students learn through the presentation of a case and controlling witnesses.

There are additional benefits too, such as:  cooperative learning, better writing skills, public speaking skills and analytical skills.
