Congratulations to the girls track and field team,
the 2008 County Champions!! With strong performances from Olivia
Ekpone, Maya Walsh, Cally Deppen, Veronica Salcido, Annie Munro,
Jessie Rubin, Kerry Nisson, Lian Boos, Katie Falk, Suzanne Falk,
Liz Calhoun, and Emily Munro - the lady Patriots stomped on the
other 24 teams and ran away with the title. A special congratulations
to Olivia Ekpone who broke 2 county records in the 100 and 200
meters and was named the Female performer of the meet. Great job
to all the athletes - come cheer them on at regionals on the 14h
& 15th at Magruder High School!!
After winning County Championship and Regionals, the Wootton Track& Field Team was nervous but excited as it headed to Baltimore to
compete in the State Championship at Morgan State University this past
weekend.
To compete, an athlete had to score in the top four places at
Regionals, or meet a predetermined time/height/length, so competition
was stiff. As a large high school, Wootton is in division 4A, so it
only competes against other large high schools at States, whereas at
the County meet all schools competed.
Although Wootton simply could not overcome its biggest obstacle to
winning the State title -- Eleanor Roosevelt H.S. from Greenbelt --
there was a stiff competition for the Second Place Trophy. Oxon Hill
vs Wootton, throughout the meet. Every point counted. Freshman
Olivia Eckpone sprinted her way to 3 gold medals in the 100, 200 and
400 meter runs. Suzanne Falk racked up points in the triple jump, Liz
Calhoun scored a medal in the pole vault, Jessie Rubin won a medal in
the 2-mile run and the relay teams won points as well. It was great,
and the girls looked fantastic in their fresh new uniforms!
At the end, it came down to a difference of just 4 points, but
Wootton won the State Trophy! Coach Kellie Redmond was even more
excited than the girls.
