Frequently Asked Questions: Q. Why bother to paint murals at all? A. There are several reasons you might want to create murals. One, doing a large project like this is unlike any of the assignments you've been given in art class. The scale, the materials, and the purpose are very different, as well as the considerations of space and color that go into the mural. Doing a mural would be very similar to what professional artists do- and as such, if you're looking at a career in art, this is your chance to get a taste of it. And, trust us, after paining the mural, your art skills will definitely improve. Second, even if you're not planning to pursue art as a career, creating a mural is nevertheless a way to contribute to the school through your art skills. The variety of murals around the school make the school a bright, cheerful, and more interesting place to be for staff, visitors and students alike. Once you graduate, the mural will become your legacy at this school and a memory linking the old and new Wootton "alumni" together. Q. How many people work on each mural? A. Anywhere from one to four. It mostly depends on the size of the mural and the amount of time and effort each member can dedicate to the mural. Q. All the interesting departments already have murals. Can I do a mural on some other topic? A. As long as it's relevant to the school setting, sure. There's definitely flexibility- the lunch cafeteria alone has three murals, each with a slightly different theme, and on the second floor of Wootton there's a beautiful yellow/blue mural that does not "belong" to any single department. Q. How does the process of painting a mural work? A.First, you'll have to discuss your topic with one of the sponsors- if you don't already have an idea, the sponsors will offer some suggestions. Once you have your topic, you'll make a rough sketch/draft of the mural. After getting approval from the arts committee, you can transfer your rough sketch on the board provided and start painting. You can use tempera paints, acrylics, or any other material within reasonable limits. Once the mural is completed to your (and the sponsor's!) satisfaction, it will be covered with plexiglass to protect it and mounted on a wall within the school. Q. How long does a mural take? A. Usually a mural is finished in about a school year to two school years, depending on the artists and the size of the mural. Q. How do I join? A. Glad you asked. Here's how it works...
