Migration to Maryland Today

Students explore the experiences of four new Americans to begin answering the five basic questions addressed past and present throughout the unit – Why do people leave their home country?  Why do people come to America?  What is the voyage to America like?  How are the new Americans treated?  What are the newcomers’ reactions to America?

 

Migration to the United States

Students make a timeline of U.S. History based on the four major waves of immigration that formed the nation, focusing mainly on the colonial and present day waves.

 

United States Migration in the Past

 Students explore answers to the same questions in the settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth, Massachusetts.

 

Maryland Migration in the Past

Students explore historical accounts to answer the five questions of the unit – applied to Maryland’s early capital – St. Mary’s City.
