Math

In this unit, the students will be exploring linear measurement. They will need to estimate and measure lengths of objects. Also, they will need to determine the area and perimeter of shapes. In addition, they will estimate and count to find the area and perimeter of given figures.

For example, the students will look at given figures such as the figure below.

Then, the students will need to find the length of the figure to the nearest centimeter (cm).

The students will also need to solve for the area and perimeter of shapes. They will be given word problems using area and perimeter.

Example: Mike wants to put a fence around his rectangular garden. He wants his garden to be at least 20 square units. Ted wants to use exactly 24 units of fencing. Record the possible gardens on the grid below. Give 2 different models that would meet Mike's needs.

Last, the students will need to determine the lengths of objects. They will use rulers to measure items to nearest centimeter and nearest half-inch. They will be given different objects. They will need to add lengths of different objects together to find the total length of all of the objects.
