What does my counselor do?

CLASSROOM LESSONS

Developmental classroom lessons offer an opportunity to provide support to the largest number of students in the school. The school counselor presents lessons for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. The lessons compliment the language arts curriculum and are designed to build student’s personal/social, academic, and career development. The lessons often focus on:

·         understanding self and others

·         coping strategies

·         peer relationships

·         problem solving

·         decision making

·         conflict resolution

GROUP COUNSELING

In a small group counseling, students will become involved in fun activities such as playing games, role-playing, drawing, reading books, and group discussions. Students will learn ways of getting along with others, communicating more effectively, controlling their behavior, and resolving conflict.

Groups are offered throughout the year based on the needs of the students.  Group focus may include the following topics:

·         Stress

·         Anger Management

·         Social Skills

·         Study/Test Taking Skills

·         Divorce

·         Friendship

·         Conflict Resolution

·         Self-Esteem

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Counseling is provided on an individual basis for students whose problems or difficulties (i.e. dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks) are affecting their academic success in school. Individual counseling allows the students to discuss problems and their causes, possible consequences, and appropriate actions that may need to be taken.

Children are referred to the counselor by:
