Visiting/Shadowing Opportunities

The Shadow Visit Coordinator for WJ is counselor Heather Dodge. Questions about the shadow program can be emailed to Heather Dodge.

The WJ Shadow Program welcomes prospective students from out-of-area schools to shadow at WJ for 1 day. Students in WJ feeder middle schools are not invited to shadow because they have several other opportunities to familiarize themselves with Walter Johnson, their home school. These opportunities include WJ Counselor visits to the middle schools during 8th grade, and the New Student Picnic and WJ Orientation in August. Students in the WJ feeder middle schools are encouraged to make use of these opportunities as well as attend WJ sports, theater, and music events during their middle school years.

Parents of prospective WJ students who would like their students to visit the school and shadow a current WJ student for a day should proceed as follows:

  1. Students may ask to shadow a particular WJ student but Ms. Dodge can also arrange a match to a WJ student with similar interests. If the shadowing student's family knows the WJ student to be shadowed, they need to contact the family of that student before making the request.
  2. All shadow visit requests must be made in writing and are approved for one day only. There is no repeat shadow visit. Wait for confirmation that the visit/shadow experience has been approved for a particular day.
  3. Both the parent and the visiting student must sign in at the WJ Main Office no later than 7: 30 a.m. on the day of the visit and then proceed to the Counseling Department.
  4. Please note that shadow visits are not scheduled during the months of September and May and are limited during the month of June. Plan accordingly.
