Mission Statement

The WJHS Latin Honor Society (LHS) is an organization which honors those students who demonstrate dedication to scholarship in and promotion of the study of the Latin language and Roman culture. Members of this society display a high degree of academic achievement, leadership, and integrity in the discipline. Students who receive this honor are active as scholars, as they further their own understanding of the language, and as tutors, as they assist their fellow Latin students.

OFFICERS ELECTED FOR THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR:
President: Alberto Ippolito
Vice-President: Pam Fucello
Secretary: Sarah Norkola-Smith
Treasurer: Miklos Szebeni

Requirements

A student is eligible to join LHS after having successfully completed his or her third semester of Latin. To qualify, a student must have an overall A average for those three semesters.

In order to wear the cords of LHS at graduation, a student must continue his or her study of Latin in the senior year and must volunteer his or her time as a peer tutor during designated lunch study sessions.

Members of LHS must participate in LHS activities, including tutoring, fund-raising, and preparing the foreign language honor societies’ induction ceremony.

Application

To apply for LHS, a student must obtain school transcripts showing grades for all (at least three) semesters of Latin taken. The student must then submit those transcripts to the society’s sponsor, Ms. Generose, for review.
