Task Definition

What am I supposed to do?

Once you have received your nation assignment (from the list below, or another that you have discussed with our teacher), follow the steps below to complete your research project (essay and visual—see below). Once projects are completed, you will be making a brief presentation in class on what you have learned.

  1. Provide a brief overview of the early history of your nation or the region of the world it is in (from 1500 to 1900).
  1. Describe the modern (20th-century) history of your nation.
  1. What is the main cause of present-day conflict (political, economic, and/or social) in your nation? Does it involve self-determination, limited resources, national identity, religion, or ethnicity? Describe this in detail, and explain how this conflict is tied to the modern history of your region (i.e., a connection to imperialism, World War I, World War II, the Cold War).
  1. How is this nation dealing with this conflict? Who are the leaders involved, and what are their ideas? If the conflict involves other nations, who are their leaders and what are their responses to the situation? Are there any multinational organizations (the United Nations, NATO, the Red Cross) involved in dealing with this conflict? If so, are they helping? Why or why not?
  1. What are the future prospects for your nation? Will this conflict be resolved soon? Why or why not? How will your nation function in the 21st century—what are its economic strengths and weaknesses? Are there any other social or political issues or conflicts that they will have to deal with in the future?
