Task: What am I supposed to do?

Rachel Carson presents many anecdotal pieces of evidence describing the negative effects of chemical usage on the environment, pest populations and humans.  Since Silent Spring was published 50 years ago, you have the opportunity to examine if the predictions that Rachel Carson made in 1962 came true and how laws that the United States enacted because of this book effected the environment.

Assignment

All students will read chapters 1, 2, 3, 16 & 17 and submit notes about each chapter for credit.

Assignment: Due Date: February 17, 2012

Purpose

Students will work in a group of six students (maximum) to determine the effects that the book Silent Spring had on our national, state and local environmental policies.

The Task

Students will be divided into one of these five groups.  These reading summaries will be due 1/30/12

Earth –soil, insects, earthworms, plants group will read chapters 5, 6.
Sea –surface water, underground water, rain water. Group will read chapters 4, 9.
Sky –aerosol pesticides/herbicides, birds group will read chapters 8, 10, 7 (pick two chapters to read)
Cancer –Effects of pesticides/herbicides on humans group will read chapters 12, 14.
Why? – why did we use these chemicals and what happened that we didn't expect to happen will read chapters 11, 15.

For your topic you must:

1. Using Silent Spring as your initial source, describe five situations that the application of chemicals was designed to contain.

2. Using Silent Spring as your source, describe the effects that the chemical application had on the environment as well as the target population.

3. Describe two additional communities (anywhere in the world) that faced the same type of problem as described in your Silent Spring reading.

4. Identify and describe a government policy (national, state or local) that was enacted as a result these chemical applications.

5. Describe the effect this government policy had on correcting the problem it was designed to fix. (use data)

6. Describe the effect this policy had on the community – what were the changes that people had to make to comply with the law.

7. Describe any unintended consequences this law had.

8. Describe the group’s position on the continued implementation of the law or changes that need to be made to the law. If there are group members that dissent from the majority, their view should also be included.

Presentation

Your presentation should keep the interest of your classmates as well as flow smoothly as each student presents their portion of the project. Your presentation can include power point, a poster, a skit, hand outs, movie clips or any other format you wish. Your presentation should be at least 7 minutes long but no longer than 12 minutes. You must include a method for your peers to take notes (graphic organizer or guided notes for instance).
