Task Definition

Choices & Responsibility:
A
lternative Medicines
and Dietary Supplements

In a previous Health unit, students researched current information concerning alternative medicines and treatments and nutritional or sports supplements. As noted in these previous research papers, the safety of these supplements and practices is regulated very little, if at all, as compared to conventional medicines. These substances are sold legally and readily available even though long term effects may not be known at this time. At the same time, this does not necessarily mean that these practices and choices are without merit, unsafe or ineffective.

The objective of this paper is CHOICE AND RESPONSIBILITY. If an individual chooses to use or has used one of these substances or treatments and suffers an adverse effect, who is responsible? Does the individual sue the manufacturer of the product, the FDA for not sufficiently regulating the product or assume personal responsibility?

YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS TO TAKE A POSITION ON THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:

Where does the primary responsibility lie concerning an
individual's health and the decision to use alternative treatments or nutritional or sports supplements?

Does it lie with the individual, the government
or the manufacturer?

Take a stand concerning "who is responsible" using magazine or newspaper articles which support your opinion. Refer to the Media Center Newspaper and Magazine Resources in the Learning Research Hub and use ProQuest, Sirs, Electric Library, and FACTS.com as reference material.

State your opinion in a 2-3 paragraph paper (typed, 12pt. Double-spaced) using factual information from your research.
