Assignment

The ancient Greeks had a fascinating culture and made advances in many areas
such as science, math, theater, etc. Choose one aspect of Greek life that interests you
and research it. Then write a 2-3-page report on the information and prepare a brief
demonstration, illustration, or presentation of the information.

Getting Started:
To begin this project, think of a subject area that interests you: math, science, literature, architecture, women’s roles, military, etc. Then begin researching that subject area in relationship to the ancient Greek culture.  After reviewing basic information in that particular area, narrow your topic to focus on one particular person, discovery, invention, etc.  Examine the example below:

             theater
             ancient Greek theater
theater construction during the Hellenistic Age

Now you will have a topic for your report!  More than one student may research a certain aspect of Greek life (sports, math, etc.), BUT each student should have a different focus.  For example, two students may research Greek theater, but only one can research the actor Thespis.

Process:
1.  Choose a topic.
2.  Research the information.
3.  Gather notes and keep a record of resources.
4.  Draft the report.
5.  Choose a way to demonstrate/illustrate/present the information IN ADDITION to the report.
6.  Buy the supplies you need for your illustration/presentation.
7.  Edit the report.
8.  Revise the report.
9.  Proofread the report.
10.  Submit the final copy and present.

Presentation Ideas

There are a variety of ways you may present the information in your report and the method you choose depends on the type of information you research. To continue the example of the topic of theater construction during the Hellenistic Age, a person writing this report may choose to create a model of a theater. Other options for the presentation could include sketches of theaters or architect drawings of the theaters. Basically, be creative. The list below of possible projects may help to spark your imagination.

Searching the Shelves

All computers in the library can access the Media Center's Electronic Card Catalog. It is located
on the Global Access Menu under Media Center Programs. The Catalog identifies all the holdings
(books, etc.) of the WJHS Media Center. It is also possible to search for materials on the
MCPS Library Catalog Online. Be sure to set the limits of your search to Walter Johnson HS only.

If you wish to expand your research use this link to Other Libraries. This link provides direct
connections to the Montgomery County Public Library system, as well as libraries at NIH,
University of Maryland, the Library of Congress and others.

For this assignment, the following call numbers will be helpful:

292, 700, 880.8, 913.38, 938
