
Certificates of Meritorious Service are awarded to graduating seniors who
have contributed 260 or more hours of service by the time of graduation. Awards
are given at graduation practice. Seniors with at least 260 hours who have
not yet received the award can write the following on college applications:
“
Eligible for Certificate of Meritorious Service given by the State of Maryland
for at least 260 hours of Student Service Learning”
Most Valuable Viking Awards – Awarded to students who have contributed to the Whitman Community in a significant way through their commitment, talent or compassion. The awards focus on activities other than sports and academics. Students with outstanding community service will be considered for this award. Leadership Montgomery Youth Community Service Leadership Award Seniors who have completed 260 hours of service by the end of junior year are eligible to apply. Grades are not a factor in award selection. Applications are due at the beginning of March. Five $1,000 awards are made. See: www.leadershipmontgomerymd.org/awards/ycsla.asp. This award is sponsored by the Rockville law firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy and Ecker, PA.
Kiwanis Club of Bethesda Community Service Scholarship is a $1000 dollar college scholarship for two deserving Walt Whitman seniors who have excelled in their service to the community. To be considered you must complete a 500 word essay describing your community service involvement and its impact. Contact Mr. DeMember (Donald_j_demember@mcpsmd.org) in Room C326 for details. Due about May 1.
Jane Fairweather Community Service Scholarship is a $500 scholarship offered to three seniors selected by Whitman. Apply in late March/early April. It is based on outstanding service to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase community. Service hours counted as part of the SSL graduation requirement cannot be included. Contact Mrs. Geisler for details.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is open to those
students who apply through the organization where they did their service. All
hours must be done with that organization. Organizations can apply on-line to
be a certified organization with the program. Awards are given at different
