The Whitman High School Education Foundation was established in 1995 to augment Whitman’s educational goals in areas that are not fully funded by the state and county budgets. By funding professional training and development for teachers, counselors, and staff and by financing large expenditures that modernize the student’s learning and community experience, we hope to support an educational environment whose aim is excellence.
In the spring of 2007 we announced an ambitious campaign to raise funds for a state-of-the-art language lab. The lab would provide much-needed enrichment for foreign language students as well as support those trying to master English as a second language. The lab would greatly enhance the classroom teacher’s ability to monitor speaking and listening skills. It would encourage language learning in more stimulating, interactive and enriching ways and would accommodate up to 32 students at a time, maximizing learning efficiency for both students and teachers. Further, having a language lab would significantly reduce the administrative time involved in testing for advanced students.
The fall 2006 fundraising effort was done in coordination with the Arts Boosters. We raised $20,000 toward lightweight exhibit panels to partially replace an antiquated and dangerous artwork display system. The new panels made their debut at the Whitman Arts Festival in the Spring of 2007.
Previous Foundation projects have included the purchase of fifteen computers and worktables for the Media Center. The additional computers allow students access to references books, online databases, and websites. Whitman faculty is on hand to assist and workstations are now readily available. We have also supplied new world maps for the Social Studies department, calculators for the Math department, and staff training in AP, Special Education, and Guidance. The first project was the renovation of the inner courtyard.
As the Foundation grows, its potential to have a positive impact on the excellence of our school also grows. Generous community support has made the Foundation’s projects a resounding success so far, and continued support will ensure that the Foundation can continue to augment Whitman’s educational goals. Anyone interested in working on Foundation projects and/or becoming a Board member, please contact any of the Directors.
