Department Overview
Welcome to the Special Education Department!
The Special Education Department at Wheaton High School is designed to provide individual educational assistance to students with disabilities. The department identifies each student's specific area of need and develops a plan to maximize educational potential. Our goal is to ensure that all students have access to school and community resources that provide them with the same opportunities that each student in MCPS is afforded.
The Special Education program at Wheaton consists of three programs: Learning for Academic Disabilities, School Community Based, and the Learning for Independence programs. We provide resource support for students in general education classes, team-taught classes, and self-contained classes throughout the school day. In addition, we provide individualized tutoring during lunch and have special education support at the Homework Center and Saturday Academy.
The Special Education department also focuses on problem solving, behavior management, and self-advocacy skills. We work to enable students with disabilities to access community and school resources and voice their strengths and needs in order to be successful.
