Advanced Placement Opportunities

Mission Statement

The Advanced Placement Program at Wheaton High School strives to   engage students in the pursuit of knowledge, equip them with habits that develop and sharpen their critical thinking skills, encourage them to dedicate their minds to academic excellence, and empower them to be thoughtful leaders in their communities.  The program seeks to be a model of equitable access, meaningful  community engagement, and effective teaching and learning.

What is AP?

Advanced placement (AP) courses are college level courses that are offered in high school.  These courses are designed to provide a   challenge students who are curious and want to learn more about a     particular subject.  Most successful AP students have a sense of wonder about the topic of their AP course(s).  They are willing to work hard, think independently and actively engage in both       homework and class work.  AP teachers expect their students to    develop and express their own ideas and think critically about what they read, hear and see.  Through this process, students reach their own conclusions about the world as they think consider it from   multiple perspectives.

Benefits of AP

  • AP courses prepare students for the kind of work that they will do in college.
  • Students who earn a C or higher earn one quality point for every AP course.  In a    students’ weighted GPA, an A is worth 5 points, a B is worth 4 points, and a C is worth 3 points.
  • Students can earn college credit or placement based on their AP exam scores.
  • (This could save thousands of dollars in college tuition!)
  • Students have the satisfaction of facing and meeting the academic challenge of college level courses while in high school.
  • Students have an opportunity to expand their minds and grow in ways that were once unimaginable.
