Academy of Biosciences & Health ProfessionsRecommended Academy Medical Careers PathwayThe Medical Careers pathway builds upon a student's strong background in biology and enables students to plan and prepare for one of the many careers in the rapidly expanding field of medicine and health care. Students with a special interest in the medical sciences, medical school, and future medical professions will experience in-depth learning opportunities that focus on anatomy, physiology, disease processes, college-level medical terminology, patient care skills including CPR, and current issues related to the health care profession. Other areas of emphasis include physical therapy skills, taking vital signs, principles of infection control, and care of the hospitalized. During the second semester of their junior year, students gain hands-on experience as they put the knowledge and skills they have learned into practice at medical facilities in the community This is a sample planner that may be tailored to meet a student's individual needs. All students must take prescribed English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and other courses required for a Maryland Diploma. Those courses are part of each academy pathway. While we recommend honors and Advanced Placement courses, all students are invited to participate in the Academy. Academy faculty and counselors will work to help ensure student success. See the DCC High School Program Overview and the MCPS Course Bulletin for more information.
