Academy of Biosciences & Health ProfessionsRecommended Academy Biotechnology PathwayBiotechnology is the application of advances made in the biological sciences to help us better adjust to our changing environment. The Biotechnology pathway is a two year sequence consisting of three academy courses which builds upon a student's strong background in biology. In the introductory course, Molecular Biotechnology, students learn about the variety of biological sciences that incorporate the processes of biotechnology as well as develop problem solving-skills through hands-on laboratory investigations. These studies require students to integrate the latest in laboratory equipment and computer technology and laboratory techniques with background information in microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Special Topics in Biotechnology provides opportunities to engage in advanced studies in such fields as Forensics and Environmental, Agricultural, Marine, and Medical Biotechnologies. This is a sample planner that may be tailored to meet a student's individual needs. All students must take prescribed English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and other courses required for a Maryland Diploma. Those courses are part of each academy pathway. While we recommend honors and Advanced Placement courses, all students are invited to participate in the Academy. Academy faculty and counselors will work to help ensure student success. See the DCC High School Program Overview and the MCPS Course Bulletin for more information.
