The Academy of Biosciences and Health Professions offers three pathways:

Students select a pathway to prepare for the challenges of college and the many rapidly expanding careers in biotechnology, biological research, and medicine. In-depth learning activities utilizing the latest in laboratory and computer equipment together with the latest research provide real world lab experiences. Students maintain a portfolio and participate in various career-based experiences such as focused job shadows and college/business site visits to reinforce the connection between school and the student's future. Students are encouraged to participate in an internship or industry-mentored senior venture project. College credit may be offered upon successful completion of these pathways.

Why?

  • Pharmaceutical companies and other businesses are expected to increase their use of biotechnology techniques, which in turn, will increase the demand for biological and medical scientists.
  • The US Department of Labor predicts faster than average job growth for biological and medical scientist.
  • More biological scientists will be needed to determine the environmental impact of industry and government actions as well as to correct past environmental problems.
  • Due to the continued expansion of the health care industry, employment of physicians, nurses, and therapists is expected to grow faster that the average for all occupations through the year 2008.
  • The growing emphasis on health and exercise as means of disease prevention will continue to promote growth in these fields.
  • The increase in demand for leisure time and fitness activities will continue to expand opportunities in those fields

This High School Program will provide the student with an opportunity to meet or exceed the following Indicators of Rigor as established by the Maryland State Department of Education:

  • 2 credits of foreign language
  • 2 credits in advanced technology
  • Math course beyond Algebra 2 and Geometry
  • 4 credits in science
  • CTE Program Completer
