Clubs and Activities

CHORUS CLUB 
Meets after school every Tuesday.  Chorus Club is open to ALL students with an interest in singing and performing.  Numerous assembly and evening performances are scheduled throughout the school year.

DRAMA CLUB
Open to all interested students. Tryouts are held, and rehearsals are after school on Thursdays, and as announced.  Each year the drama club produces a play or musical with two evening performances.

GIRL 21 
Growing Independent Resourceful Leaders for the 21st Century is a club for Julius West girls interested in acquiring the necessary skills that will enable them to deal with the issues and problems which confront today’s youth.  The girls meet every Tuesday after school.  Guest speakers will be invited to our meetings and field trips will be planned.

GREEN TEAM 
Club is all about energy conservation and recycling.  Members of this club will help Julius West recycle, save energy and money by making smart energy decisions and working as an environmental steward. The Green Team will conduct energy audits of classrooms, check lights and computer monitors making sure we are not wasting energy. The Green Team is interested in protecting the environment and prolonging the life of our energy resources.   Bring your enthusiasm, questions and ideas to our Green School Club.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY
Is an academic after school program that is required for all seventh and eighth grade cluster social studies students, however, other students are also welcome.  In competition with other students in the county, state and country, students conduct research and create high quality projects on historical issues that are in harmony with the annual theme of History Day.  The after school sessions on Thursdays include skill instruction, workshops, one-on-one guidance and peer support as well as guest speakers.  Although not required to attend, many students find the after school sessions helpful.  All necessary documents are provided for students during their social studies classes.

HOMEWORK CLUB
Will meet every Wednesday and Thursday in the media center.  Students should report to the media center at 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  They can use this time to work on homework under the supervision of a classroom teacher.  The media center may also be used for research projects at this time.

INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS 
Is a MCPS sponsored activity at the middle school level.  Eligible boys and girls in 7th and 8th grade may try out for co-ed cross country, softball, basketball and soccer.  Softball season is 9/5 - 10/25, cross country is 9/5 – 10/10, basketball season is 11/28 - 2/26 and soccer season is 3/11 - 5/14.

INTRAMURALS 
Is an after school activity that is an extension of the Physical Education department. All eligible Julius West students are welcome to attend with a permission slip and payment of the ECA fee.  Available intramurals will be announced in the morning and will also be posted on the Intramural Bulletin Board outside the boy's locker room.  Intramurals may include a variety of sports and games.  The two main intramurals include the Basketball Shoot Out in the Fall and the Track Challenge in the Spring.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Employs traditional “Big Band” instrumentation and provides opportunities for musical self-expression through basic improvisation.  Auditions are required for membership.  Jazz Ensemble performs at school and community concerts.  Weekly rehearsals will be held each Tuesday from 2:45 – 4:00 in Room 136.

KNITTING CLUB
Is open to all students, boys and girls, who would like to try knitting.  Students will learn the fundamental skills of casting on, knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing.  They will acquire the skills to complete beginner projects, and the foundation to learn more complicated knitting.  Club will meet Wednesdays.

LEARNING FOR LIFE
Helps students mature as they grow into young adults.  Both social and academic advancement are discussed.  Learning for Life meets two times weekly after school.

MATH TEAM 
Meets Wednesday after school in room 229 starting in mid-September. There are 4 regional math meets in the season. The individual scores from the meets are used to determine the top 20 in Montgomery County. The top 20 are invited to practice with the Blair High School math team and compete in the ARML. We may also compete in the AMC 8, Mathathon, and Mathcounts. The type of questions encountered through math team is excellent preparation for the SATs math section.

NEWSPAPER STAFF
Meets after school on Wednesdays for the purpose of writing, interviewing, editing and generally organizing the Paw Print, which we plan to publish monthly.  Membership on the staff remains open throughout the year to afford all interested students an opportunity for participation.

SCIENCE CLUB
(With an emphasis on the environment)  Will meet every Wednesday.  It is open to all students with an interest in science.  Throughout the year we will have the opportunity to conduct investigations, enter competitions, listen to guest speakers, and possibly go on a field trip.

STEP TEAM
A blend of precision drills, acrobatics, athletics, chanting, rhyme and the use of props makes the LADY JAG STEP TEAM a real challenge and a thrill to watch.  We meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school.  Tryout will be the 3rd week of September.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)
Officers and delegates are elected during the fall.  Meetings are held during the school year on the second Thursday of each month.  SGA sponsors school-wide events and activities.  Several school dances are held each year.

YEARBOOK
Staff needs dependable students who enjoy detail and accuracy to help plan and assemble the yearbook.  They organize and label pictures, proof copy, and sell and distribute yearbooks.  Students who are interested in photography are also needed.  Meetings will be held on an as-needed basis.
