MCPS’ United We Learn – All Means All Contest:   Reminder - Students … Contestants are asked to use visual art and the written word to celebrate diversity while exploring the matter of equity for all.  It’s a contest to encourage collaboration, so entries are submitted by groups of two to eight students.  There should be a flier posted in your STAR room with the additional details.  Check it out!  Put together a creative entry that explores what equity means and the barriers that limit some from having access to the same opportunities and resources as others.  The contest runs through March 16th.

Flag at Half Staff:   As a mark of respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on February 14, 2018 at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, by the authority vested in the President of the United States, President Donald Trump ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff effective Thursday, February 15,  until sunset, Monday, February 19, 2018.

 

Cleaning out Notebooks (Serino):

What follows is a message about cleaning out your notebooks from Ms. Serino by way of the notebook herself  “Hey kid. This is your notebook with an important message.  I am WAY, I mean WAY overflowing with papers you DO NOT NEED ANYMORE.  Would you PLEASE look at the dates on these papers and CLEAN ME OUT.  I am literally BURSTING at the seams with papers from marking period 1 and marking period 2 that should be a) stored in a folder at home or b) put in the recycling bin.  If you are unsure what to remove, ask your teachers. As your loyal notebook I would be SO, SO grateful.

 

Stop Hunger Now (Serino):  A million thanks to Ms. O’Reilly, Ms. Johns, the Service Club members and the volunteers at our “Stop Hunger Now” event on Thursday night.  Congratulations to the group for making over 10,000 shelf stable meals.  Remarkable!

 

ACTORS (Watkins):  Auditions for the Spring Musical, “Willy Wonka, Junior,” will be held on Tuesday, February, 27th and Thursday, March 1st, after school.  Sign-ups and more information will be coming soon.         

 

Black History Month Music (Thomas):  In honor of Black History Month, the musical selections you heard this morning were from none other than the great critically acclaimed Marian Anderson.  These facts were taken from Jone Johnson Lewis:

-She was born 1897-1993

-She was a solo performer lieder, opera, and American spirituals

-She was dignified and determined to succeed despite the “color barrier”

- She wa the first black performer at the Metropolitan Opera and known as an incredible concert singer

-Her range was about three octaves from low D to high C

-Today’s selections included: “Deep River”, “Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child” “Erbame dieh, Mein Gutt by Bach).
