American Indian Heritage Month  (Bufkin): The Iroquois people taught Benjamin Franklin a lot about democracy. The Iroquois had a chief who ruled only as long as the tribe supported his decisions. The Iroquois divided power among several groups as we do in Congress. When Franklin helped write the US Constitution, he cited the Iroquois as an influence.

Table Tennis (Felix): Table tennis intramurals will be starting Wednesday, December 6th after school. Come check it out!

 

Basketball Intramurals (Swailes):  The last basketball intramural will take place tomorrow -  Tuesday, November 21.

 

Basketball tryouts (Swailes, Katz, Kanon): Boys’ basketball tryouts are Tuesday, November 28 and Wednesday, November 29.  Girls’ tryouts are Thursday, November 30 and

Tuesday, Dececember 5th.  All physicals and forms are due to Mr. Kanon in the Main Office or room 211 by Monday, November 27th.


Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair & Middle School Seminar (Kohlerman):  Families of 8th graders, save the date- February 9 from 6:00-7:30 pm at Einstein HS for a Historically Black Colleges and University College Fair and Middle School Seminar.  There is a special session for middle school parents, “If I knew then, what I know now!  College and Financial Aid Planning from a Parent’s Perspective.”   event for  Einstein HS.  Register on the MCPS website:

5th Annual Holiday House (Serino): The Westland Cares committee of parents will be sponsoring our Fifth Annual Holiday House where students can select gifts for their family members.  Please send in new or gently used items for all ages (though we typically run short on “Dad-gifts”).  We also accept donations of wrapping paper, ribbons, tape and gift bags.  The Holiday House will occur December 12-14, so find or buy your treasures soon.

6th Grade Team Builder (Serino):  Many thanks to all of the students and staff who were involved in the team building activity on Friday.  Special shout-outs to Ms. Walstein and Ms. Hennessy.

 

Homework-free Weekend (Serino): This coming weekend is a no-homework weekend at Westland.  This means that no homework (except reading) is due on Monday, November 27.  We hope students enjoy this extra time with their families.

Book Wars Meeting TODAY (Salnick):  Seventh and eighth graders meet during STAR in the Media Center.  Bring your books and questions.  Sixth graders meet during A Lunch.  Bring your lunch, books, and questions.  Sixth graders, remember you have a book quiz today!

American Indian Heritage Month (Fuentes): There is a Native American story where wolves sing to the moon into its existence, and from this story the myth that wolves howl at the moon arose.  It’s not too late to complete a quick quiz in the Media Center, where you match Native American stories to the correct tribe.  Swing by for a chance to win a prize!

Splattered Ink (Kass):   Splattered Ink, Westland’s literary and arts magazine is accepting submissions. We are looking for writing of all kinds, as well as art work and photography, Deadline is December 11th. Please bring or send submissions to Mrs. Kass in Room 201.

Media Center (Salnick): Open for all lunches!

American Indian Heritage Month (Fuentes): Native Americans planted three sisters (corn, beans, and squash) together so that they would benefit each other. The corn provides a structure for the beans to climb. The beans provide the nitrogen to the soil, and the squash spreads along the ground preventing weeds.

After School Activities (Serino): There are no after school activities today.  Enjoy the long weekend.

Early Release Day (Serino): The schedule today is Homeroom, 1, 2, 6, 7, 3, 4 and 5. No bookbags in D lunch.  There is no school tomorrow and Friday.  Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.
