8th Grade MYP Exit Interviews (Johns): For interviews today, bring your MYP folder with your resume and 2 assignments.  (If you need a Chromebook to share an artifact, please bring one from your STAR class if possible.)

8th Grade MYP Exit Interview Reminders (Johns): The following STAR classes should be prepared for their MYP Exit Interview tomorrow: Stewart, Gruenspecht,  Cromwell, Hadfield, Ragsdale and Hodkinson. Have your MYP assignments and MYP resume printed and in your manila folder. Tomorrow,  wear clothing fit for an interview. Any student who is absent, should be prepared to interview the day they return.

Jewish American Heritage Month (Serino)- Daveed Diggs is a heralded actor  but best known for his Tony-award winning portrayal of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the Tony-award winning musical, Hamilton.

 

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (Jefferson)- Steven Chu won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on cooling atoms.   Chu served as the US Secretary of Energy from 2009-2013.

Career STAR-The last Career STAR for the school year will be this Thursday in the Media Center. Ms. Northrup will be here to talk about her career in Crisis Communication. Sign up at all lunches

8th Grade STARs (Khouri): Dance permissions went out today. Tickets on sale next week!

Youth on the Rise! (Sanya)- Montgomery County Police Summer Camp is occurring on June 18-22  at Tilden Middle School and August 20-24 at Argyle Middle School for 8th grade students only. It is a free camp and the deadline for registration has been extended. Get your registration packets in the main office or during C or D lunch.

Rolling Equity Sessions (Johnson)  All staff are reminded to join the equity learning in 212 during their designated period.

Flag at Half Staff/Moment of Silence (Serino): As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on May 18th in Santa Fe, Texas, President Donald J. Trump has ordered that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset today.

Yearbook Classes for Next Year - If you registered for yearbook as your elective for next year, please join Mrs. Tinney and some current yearbook staff in Lab 224 tomorrow during Star to find out more about the course. Your Star teacher will have a pass for you.

Jewish American Heritage Month (Serino)- Sue Bird is an Israel-American professional basketball player for the Seattle Storm that played collegiate ball at UConn.  She has two NBA championships and four Olympic Gold medals.  She was voted as one of the 20 best ever WNBA players.

 

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month -

Maya Lin rose to fame at just 21-years-old when an architectural student at Yale University, Lin won a contest to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her design beat out more than 1,400 entries. The memorial's 594-foot granite wall features the names of the more than 58,000 U.S. soldiers who died during the Vietnam War.

 

Congratulations to the following musicians for performing a solo at the Maryland State Solo Festival and earning the highest rating of Superior:

Charlotte Torrey, Grace Wilkins, Lucas Randazzo, Aaron Levitt, Shisui Torii, and Bruno Chong.

 

Book/Materials Check for 8th Graders (Serino)- Eighth grade teachers will be checking for books and materials no later than Thursday.  Financial obligations will be created if materials are missing.

 

French Exchange Trip Information Meeting - Tomorrow night (Wednesday) in the Media Center at 7PM. If you take/speak   French come learn  how  to participate in our trip this fall.

 

Westland Middle School is going to Ecuador and the Galapagos!

There will be a meeting tonight at 6:30 in room 216 to learn more about our June 2019 trip!    Hope to see parents and students there!

Guest Teachers (Scholl)  We would like to welcome the following guest teachers to Westland today: Ms. White, Ms. Spencer, Ms. Toure, Ms Mosbaek and Ms Stanford.

French Exchange Trip  The trip is open to any student with  some knowledge of French. If you missed last night’s meeting and would like information about the trip see Madame Dahiya in Room 217. Signup deadline is June 8th.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (Jefferson)- Elaine Chao has a distinguished career in public service, currently serving as the Secretary of Transportation. She was the director of the Peace Corps from 1991 to 1992 and then led the United Way from 1992 to 1996.

 

Jewish American Heritage Month (Serino)-  Aly Raisman is a two-time Olympic gymnast and member of the 2012 Fierce Five and the 2016 Final Five teams who won all-around gold medals.  In the Rio de Janeiro Olympics she won the silver medal for her floor routine and was the all-around silver medalist.

 

BCC boys JV basketball tryouts.  All interested in playing basketball at BCC.  We will have tryouts next Thursday May 31,  4:00 – 5:30 at BCC.

 

Career STAR- Career STAR will be held today immediately following the announcements in the media center.

Book/Materials Check for 8th Graders (Serino)- Eighth grade teachers will be checking for books and materials no later than TODAY  Financial obligations will be created if materials are missing. Students must pay any financial obligations before purchasing tickets to the party.
