The Middle School Summer Program is coming to Westland in Summer 2008. Mark your calendar now so your child does not miss wonderful opportunity for increased instructional time! Because of construction at Westland this summer, our summer school is being housed at B-CC HS. The dates for the intervention classes are July 7-August 1 with a fee of $95. The date dates for the Focus classes are July 7-July 25 with a fee of $95. The school day will be from 7:45-11:30 am. School buses will be in service. The following classes will be offered:
Class Information Intervention Reading 6: The intervention Reading class for incoming 6th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide reading instruction for students who have not been successful with English/Reading curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. This class will consist of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 5th grade curricula, as well as a preview of the 6th grade curriculum student will experience in the 2008-2009 school year. Students will focus on 4 key areas (main idea, context clues, summarization, and inferencing). Students will also practice fluency, language arts, complete one summer reading assignment, and some writing instruction is embedded.
Intervention Reading 7: The intervention Reading class for incoming 7th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide reading instruction for students who have not been successful with English/Reading curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. This class will consist of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 6th grade curricula, as well as a preview of the 7th grade curriculum student will experience in the 2008-2009 school year. Students will focus on 4 key areas (main idea, context clues, summarization, and inferencing). Students will also practice fluency, language arts, complete one summer reading assignment, and some writing instruction is embedded.
Intervention Reading 8: The intervention Reading class for incoming 8th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide reading instruction for students who have not been successful with English/Reading curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. This class will consist of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 7th grade curricula, as well as a preview of the 8th grade curriculum student will experience in the 2008-2009 school year. Students will focus on 4 key areas (main idea, context clues, summarization, and inferencing). Students will also practice fluency, language arts, complete one summer reading assignment, and some writing instruction is embedded.
Intervention Math 6: The intervention mathematics class for incoming 6th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide mathematics instruction for students who have not been successful with mathematics curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. This class will provide an overview of math content to prepare the student for middle school by consisting of a review of content, concepts, and skills from the 5th grade curricula, as well as a preview of the Math 6 curriculum students will experience in the 2008-2009 school year.
Intervention Math 7: The intervention mathematics class for incoming 7th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide mathematics instruction for students who have not been successful with mathematics curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. The focus of this class is on number sense, reasoning, and data. Students will preview the material to be covered in Math 7 unit 1 (Statistics). They will review some prerequisite graph and data analysis skills to be able to apply them to these areas. There is also some material from Math 7 unit 2 (integers and equations) and some fraction/decimal review. All of which are a preview of the Math 7 curriculum students will experience in the 2008-2009 school year.
Intervention Math 8: The intervention mathematics class for incoming 8th graders will consist of a maximum class size of 20 students. The four-week program will provide mathematics instruction for students who have not been successful with mathematics curriculum and/or are at risk of not meeting the proficiency level on the MSA. For this course there are two focus areas—geometry and measurement, as well as rational numbers. Both of these topics are critical to success in the Algebra-Prep curriculum which the students will experience in the 2008-2009 school year.
Focus on Math 7: The Focus on Mathematics program will consist of classes of 20 course-alike students. This three-week class is for students who, with additional mathematics instruction during the summer, will be able to maximize their potential to be successful in an above-level mathematics class in the fall of 2008, although participation in this class does not guarantee that a child will be placed in an above-level mathematics class in fall 2008. Decisions about school year course placement will be made on an individual basis. Focus on Math 7 is open only to students entering Grade 6 who are enrolled or being considered or enrollment in Math 7 for fall 2008. The focus of this class is on number sense, reasoning, and data. Students will preview the material to be covered in Math 7 unit 1 (Statistics). There is also some material from Math 7 unit 2 (integers and equations) and some fraction/decimal review. In addition, a few areas of acceleration in Algebra-Prep content is included.
Focus on Investigations into Mathematics (IM): The Focus on Mathematics program will consist of classes of 20 course-alike students. Focus on IM is open only to students entering Grade 6 or Grade 7 who are enrolled or being considered or enrollment in IM for fall 2008. Students will study numbers and numerals (understand number systems) and special reasoning. This course has been designed to align with the actual IM curriculum which the students will experience in the 2008-2009 school year.
Focus on Algebra: The Focus on Algebra program will consist of classes of 20 course-alike students. Focus on Algebra is open only to students who are enrolled or being considered or enrollment in middle school Algebra 1 for fall 2008. Students will focus on integers, equations, inequalities, slope, as well as other Algebraic concepts. All of which are a preview of the Algebra 1 curriculum students will experience in the 2008-2009 school year.
Focus on Geometry: The Focus on Geometry program will consist of classes of 20 course-alike students. Focus on Geometry is open only to students who are enrolled or being considered or enrollment in middle school Honors Geometry for fall 2008. This course focuses on the Algebra-Prep geometry and measurement unit with acceleration and connections made to the Honors Geometry content. |
