ATTENDANCE POLICY AND PROCEDURES
ALWAYS CALL IN THE MORNING IF A STUDENT IS ABSENT from or LATE to SCHOOL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. Call the attendance line at 301-320-6534.
ALL “NOTES” MUST INCLUDE THE STUDENT’S: NAME (FIRST AND LAST), GRADE, DATE, REASON FOR ABSENCE/LATENESS/EARLY DISMISSAL, AND THE SIGNATURE OF A PARENT/GUARDIAN.
Absent or Late-
Call the attendance line (301-320-6534) to report that the student is absent or late.
Students returning to school must bring a NOTE with their name, grade, date, reason for absence or tardiness and signature of parent, and sign-in in the main office. If the student has a NOTE, parents/guardians do not need to come into the school.
Absent students must bring a NOTE, when they return, to the main office before the start of the school day.
Leaving Early –
When leaving early, or for a portion of the day, the student must bring a NOTE stating the TIME of the early dismissal, reason, name of child, grade and date to the main office BEFORE the beginning of the school day. A pass will be issued to the student to be in the Main Office at the time indicated.
The person picking up the student must come into the Main Office. NO STUDENT WILL BE RELEASED TO AN ADULT THAT IS NOT AUTHORIZED IN WRITING TO PICK UP THE STUDENT. A photo ID is required.
All students must sign out in the Main Office if leaving the school before the final bell.
There is a direct relationship between school attendance and student achievement. Students are to attend every scheduled class, on time, each day unless there is a legitimate reason for an absence. The school day begins at 7:54 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m.
Legitimate reasons for a student absence, tardiness and dismissals are:
certified illness of the student
physical and mental incapacity
work or activity accepted by school authorities
death in the immediate family
Vacations are not an excused absence. The principal may issue an exception in extraordinary circumstances. Administrators may approve an absence at least one week in advance. It is the student’s responsibility to gather any assignments they will be missing.
A physician’s note is REQUIRED if a student is absent 5 days or more.
The Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Student Records System Manual, has revised its definition of full and half-day attendance. Therefore, “a student is counted present for a full day if the student is in attendance four (4) hours or more of the school day. A student is counted present for ½ day if in attendance for at least two (2) hours of the school day, but less than four (4) hours.
