Physical Education News
December 2008
Over the course of the next month, we will be discussing Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a fund- raising activity for the American Heart Association. We are trying to raise money for the American Heart Association to assist in medical research for heart disease and strokes. Students will be bringing home their Jump Rope for Heart packets.
You can visit the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart Web Site for information about the program. Click here to raise money online and help save lives.
In class, we are discussing healthy habits and the consequences of physical inactivity and malnutrition. Students are trying to ask as many people as they know for any donation to the American Heart Association and we have set a school goal for the first year at 3,000 dollars. Students will return their packets to me the week of December 15th.
After students have done their best job trying to raise money, we then participate in the actual Jump Rope for Heart event, which consists of several games and activities focusing on the benefits of exercise. The event will take place the week of December 15th and each class will participate during their physical education time. Since the event is taking place during class time, the release and consent forms do not need to be returned to school!!
If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to email me. Thank you in advance for helping make Wayside’s Jump Rope for Heart a success.
Finally, the kids have talked me into altering my look again if we are able to reach our goal of 3,000 dollars!!!
November 2008
Well, the DARCARS Young Run was a wonderful success thanks to the hundreds of Wayside students that participated. Wayside had a staggering 56% of students participate. I think it is also important to note that thanks to the Wayside students who continue to participate, the Wayside physical education department received a donation from DARCARS. So once again, way to go Wayside, excellent job! But, next year we are going to have to raise our goal if I have to have pink hair for the week!!!
In the coming weeks I will be discussing jump rope for heart with the kids. Information will be coming home early in the second quarter and the actual event will be the week of December 14th. During the weeks leading up to the event we will be discussing the benefits of raising money for the American Heart Association and the impact that leading a sedentary lifestyle can have on our body.
Throughout the month of November grades 3-5 will be focusing on the mechanics of throwing and catching and demonstrate an understanding of distance control with different objects. Grades K-2 during the month will be focusing on the manipulation skills of catching and rolling leading into underhand throwing and catching.
Again thank you for all of your support at the DARCARS young run!
