Music News

November 2008

Greetings from the music “world” at Wayside! November is a month of Thanksgiving performances and the beginning of a new grading-period of learning.

In Kindergarten our classes are preparing their annual Thanksgiving program of music on Tuesday morning, November 25th with songs, instruments, and movement. First Graders will be starting the exciting experience of reading music notation with singing and playing on Orff instruments. They will also be “traveling” to Grandma’s house in a delightful story/song medley for our last class of the month.

In Second Grade, PLENTY is happening. . . a field trip to Strathmore to hear an orchestra and our wonderful play entitled “The Eagle and the Turkey” on Friday morning, Nov. 21st. Third Graders begin a month-long celebration of American folk instruments and songs following a harvest theme. They will also begin the MCPS assessment on dynamics/articulation/tempo. In our Fourth and Fifth Grades November is the birthday month of composer Aaron Copland. We will study “Variations on Simple Gifts” as well as perform several Native American songs/folk games.

And there is more ahead! Please mark your 2009 calendars now for the Winter Concert (Wayside 4th Grade Chorus) on Thursday, Jan. 15th. Many thanks to all of you who are helping with these special programs and continually supporting the performing arts here at Wayside!

All 4th and 5th grade students in Montgomery County Public Schools are eligible to participate in the instrumental music program. Students may choose from several band or orchestra instruments and then receive a weekly 30 minute lesson in small homogenous groups. Participation in this program prepares students to join the bands, orchestras, jazz bands, pep bands, and other music groups at their middle schools.

There are no pre-requisites for being in instrumental music! It is, of course, an advantage if your child already reads music or plays an instrument such as the piano. However, the program is designed to accommodate both complete beginners and students with some prior music experience.
