Hospitality Management: The Hospitality Management Pathway program is new to MCPS. We use the ProStart Program which is recognized throughout the hospitality industry and is a certified foodservice program. Students will have the opportunity to obtain certification in ServSafe as well as ProStart at the end of this two year program.
This industry-based restaurant and foodservice curriculum combines classroom learning with mentored hands-on experience at qualified foodservice establishments. This program will help students gain fundamental culinary and business skills while they explore the many career options available to them in the industry during which time, students will be prepared for the adult working world, offering them on-the-job experiences before they graduate. Students who wish to complete the pathway should complete International Cultures and Cuisines/ProStart 1, Culinary Essentials/ProStart 2 and a 400 hour internship within the foodservice/hospitality industry.
Child Development 1,2,3 is a multi-grade level, multi-course level laboratory environment. Students at all levels work with children in a variety of settings, supported by study of development from the prenatal stages, through infancy and early childhood, to grade three. Students apply knowledge of physical, intellectual, language, social and emotional development by planning lessons, teaching, observing and studying four year old children in the child development laboratory. Students develop competence in: creative teaching techniques; developmentally appropriate practice; program management; child behavior and guidance; interpersonal relationships; health, nutrition and safety standards, as well as child abuse and neglect regulations. The theories of human learning and development of Erikson, Piaget, Freud, Skinner, Maslow, Montessori, and others are studied.
Child Development Level 2 students in addition to the CD 1 content learn and practice management responsibilities as they develop and implement year long goals for the lab school. After successful completion of CD 2 and organizing a portfolio a student can apply for the 90 Clock Hours Certification.
Child Development Level 3 is an independent study course, in which students will continue their exploration of child development. Students will research various educational topics and issues and explore classic assessment techniques and methods used with children. Students will utilize and test their research by participating in professional response journals and by creating and implementing child assessment vehicles appropriate to a given child’s age. Students will present their results in a long term, organized, case study report. Students will study a child in our on site preschool.
