MCPS Child Development Program Overview
Levels
Child and Adolescent Development 1 A & B
*5 SSL hours per semester
As an introductory program, this class is open to 9th-12th grade students. The Early Child Development program provides the opportunity for students to discover their potential as they work with children in our preschool. Students run the preschool and learn leadership and management skills which can be used in many professions relating to children. Students learn how to plan, teach and manage programs for children. Child development students also become familiar with communications/human relations, child psychology and development, creative learning techniques, health and nutrition and safety standards, child neglect and abuse regulations.
Child and Adolescent Development 2 A & B
*5 SSL hours per semester
After successful completion of Early Child Development 1, students continue to develop their teaching skills as they assume increased leadership responsibilities in the lab school setting. Students are responsible for program management as they develop and implement on site age appropriate experiences for preschoolers. Upon completion of CD 2 and certification requirements, students may earn certification in the “90 +9 Clock Hours Program.” This certification allows the student to obtain a senior staff position with concurrent salary and responsibilities in the daycare industry and prepares students for continuing education. The program is recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education.
Child and Adolescent Development 3 A & B and Internship
*5 SSL hours per semester
Students research careers in education and other child-related fields of study and pursue their interests through independent study, research, advocacy projects, field trips, and observations. This program involves working under teacher supervision with children at a field site, which include working in elementary schools, daycare centers, and other preschool programs. Students gain experience by working with children and adults by preparing and presenting creative teaching materials. Internships prepare students for careers in teaching, childcare, and related professions. Emphasis is placed on work skill competencies. This is course only offered double period - students register for one period of Internship and one period of Early Child Development 3, and the courses are scheduled together.
