Student Activity for Exploring Countries
and Cultures:
In order to write your report on your country and its culture, you
will need to research the following. Write down the information you
find in your writer's notebook. REMEMBER to write down the source of
your information on your Works Cited page as you do your
research.
Facts about the country:
- Country name
- Capital of country
- Major geographic regions (mountain regions,
lakes, rivers, etc.)
- Climate
- Major natural resources
- Size of the country (current population and
area)
- Type of money used
- Language(s) spoken
Facts about the culture:
- Special holidays (2-3):
- their names,
- when they occur,
- what they are about
- Special foods (2-3):
- their names, what they are made of,
- whether they are eaten at special times of
the year
- Clothing:
- the name of different pieces of clothing,
- what they are made of,
- whether they are worn at special times of
the year,
- whether adults and children wear different
types of clothing
- Sports: find out whether the country has a
particular sport that is very popular
- Famous Structures (2-3):
- when were they built,
- why were they built,
- what are they made of,
- where are they
- Musical Instruments (alternative to
structures)
- what does it look like,
- what is it made of,
- what sound does it make,
- what family of instruments does it belong
to
Facts about the country's
history:
- Famous people (2-3):
- find out the names of people,
- what they did,
- when they did it,
- and why they are important to the country.
This can include musicians, writers, leaders, sport figures,
etc.
- Government:
- what type of government?
- Is there a king/queen, a prime minister, a
president, a dictator?
- Is there a legislative branch?
- Do people vote?
Timeline/Map:
- Make a timeline showing the history of your
country
- OR
- Draw a map (Computer maps are not acceptable.
Be sure to include basic map elements: name. title, compass rose,
border, key, symbols, and scale)) that
- shows the capital and other major cities,
- places where the structures you researched
are,
- states or provinces of the country,
- and the major geographic
features.
