Be Creative with Reading and Writing!!

Summer Reading and Writing Activities, 2009

June 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This time of year the question that I am most often asked is, "What can I do to help my child continue reading and writing during the summer?"  In answer, our school is offering Summer Reading and Writing Activities to students.  Our theme this summer is “Be Creative with Reading and Writing!!”  These activities offer students opportunities to read and write for various purposes and outcomes.  There are opportunities to read from different genres, then complete an included graphic organizer, as well as complete various products or writing activities depending on the genre or type of book chosen.  Library visits are also part of the program to select interesting and appropriate books for each genre or activity.  These selections can be used in conjunction with the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries' program entitled "Summer Reading 2009:  Be Creative!" providing incentives to keep students reading and writing during the summer months.

The requirements for successfully completing the Summer Reading Activities are simple and are included with this letter.  Students will set goals to earn rewards for their reading and writing efforts.  Students will need to keep their work in a folder.  In September, students return their completed folders to me for Recognition and Celebration.  I hope to see your child at our special celebration!

Sincerely,
