Try out three educational (and fun) java applets written by a TMES parent for grades K-5

Mathflash!

A flashcard game with a timer and fun sound effects. Features 5 levels of play and 5 choices of problems (addition, subtrraction, multiplication, division, or a random mix). This applet was given a 4 star rating by the Java Applet Rating Service (JARS). New version 3.0 (Nov 15, 2000) features an tally for a "Best Score" with a time bonus for finishing quickly.

Islands!

New! Inspired by a MCPS Challange of the Week (COW) problem presented at a PTA meeting, this applet challenges students to find the "best" route if they were flying an airplane and had to visit each island on a map exactly once and return to their starting island. Players can earn "stars" and "points" by finding good routes. This is a restatement of the "classic" Travelling Salesman Problem studied by mathematicians specializing in Operations Research, and computer scientists.

Pascals Patterns

Form beautiful patterns based on values in Pascal's triangle. In addition to the artistic side, perhaps a student or two will be inspired to learn more about the important mathematical properties underlying these patterns.
