Pascal's Patterns Instructions

"Pascal's Patterns" is a Java applet for designing interesting patterns based on the values in Pascal's triangle. It is appropriate for children from pre-K through adult. The patterns and colors can be interactively selected with a large variety of different choices.

Changing the Patterns
Change the divisor. (Hit the + sign to increase by 1, "+10" to increase by 10, "X 2" to double the number, etc.)
Change the colors. Select on a color in the pallette, then click on either the remainder or the color next to it. In the remainder list, the buttons ">8O" and ">8E" refer to odd and even remainders larger than 8.
Change the symmetry. Symmetry "off" draws a lower left right triangle. Symmetry "on" draws a square pattern with symmetry line on the diagonal. Symmetry "center" draws a coarser symmetric triangle (shown in the figure).

Every time the "redraw" button is pressed the main pattern is drawn according to the selected options. Up to 5 patterns with their selected options are stored as small patterns under the "redraw" button. Clicking on a small pattern once will recall the options used. Clicking a second time (or clicking redraw) will draw the recalled pattern in its larger size.

If you have a screen resolution of 640 X 480 or less I would recommend running the small screen version

Pascal's Patterns for small screen (480 X 320).

If you have greater resolution try

Pascal's Patterns for large screen (600 X 400)

If you have a screen save capability (on a Mac press [Command] [shift] [4]) you can save your patterns as pictures.
