Red Uakari

Red Uakaris are one of the strangest looking monkeys in the Amazon basin. Their large, bald, red heads make them look somewhat similar to a bald human, although their bright orange fur distorts this feature. Unlike many Amazonian monkeys, uakaris have small tails, and they cannot use them to hang on to tree branches, only for balance. These diurnal primates feed mostly on nuts and fruit. They have exceptionally sharp teeth, perfect for cracking nutshells. These monkeys live in groups, and are exceptionally common in the flooded forests of the northern Amazon basin. Flooded forests are becoming rare, however, due to global warming. This means that red uakaris and other residents of flooded forests are in grave danger.
