The violin is the smallest of the string instruments and is held under the player's chin. The first violins were made over 400 years ago. In an orchestra there are more violins than any other instrument. The leader of the violins in an orchestra is called the concert master. He or she comes on stage just before the conductor at a concert. The concert master helps the conductor to train the orchestra. There are two violins in a string quartet. The first violin is also the leader of the quartet. The second violin plays a separate and very different piece of music to the first violin in a quartet. The violin can sound very bright and often plays fast and lively music (see diagram).
